Why Winter Hits Hard in Thetford
Cold starts, damp roads and early frosts are part of life in Norfolk and Suffolk. But they can also trigger the most common MOT failures - bulbs, wipers, tyres and brakes.
At Gorse Motors, we’ve seen how a quick winter check can save drivers against repairs and failed tests. Here’s our expert checklist to keep your vehicle safe and road-worthy until spring.
Check Your Tyres
Legal minimum tread: 1.6 mm - but we recommend at a minimum 3 mm for winter.
Use the 20p test: insert the coin into the tread grooves; if you see the outer rim of the 20p piece, consider replacing your tyres.
Check pressures regularly; cold air can cause under-inflation.
Battery Health Matters
Cold weather can reduce battery capacity by up to 30%. If your engine cranks slowly or dashboard lights flicker, we would strongly advise getting a voltage/battery test to make sure you're not going to get stuck somewhere after you stop. We can check charging output and replace failing batteries before they leave you stranded.
Lights and Visibility
Inspect all bulbs (front, rear, brake, fog, number plate).
Clean lenses and replace any dim or fogged bulbs.
Fit quality wiper blades - streaky screens arent good for visibility, and would fail an MOT.
Keep screenwash topped up with winter-grade antifreeze so that it's usable even in super chilly temperatures.
Fluids & Antifreeze
Check oil, coolant and brake fluid levels are topped up, and you've had them checked/maintained per your manufacturer's specifications
Coolant should protect to –35 °C; if you’re unsure, we can test its strength during a winter check.
Running low can lead to engine damage.
Brakes & Suspension
Winter roads mean potholes and salt, and i'm sure we don't need to explain how this is especially true in Norfolk, which can be extra hard on your brakes and suspension.
Listen for squeaks or knocks and book a quick inspection if you notice changes, A 10-minute check could prevent issues from becoming dangerous, and if nothing else gives you peace of mind.
Heater & Air-Con (Demist Safety)
Your air-con isn’t just for summer - it helps demist the windscreen in winter, and yeah this one does sound silly on a winter check-list, but it really does help.
If air is weak or not cold, it may need a regas. We handle both R134a and R1234yf systems - book an air-con refresh while you service.
Keep a Winter Kit in the Car
It's not for everybody, but it is wide to Include: de-icer, scraper, torch, hi-vis, blanket, phone charger and a warning triangle.
It’s a small addition that makes a big difference in rural areas like Thetford, especially if you're travelling out in some pretty adverse weather conditions.
