How to Prepare Your Car for an MOT

If your MOT test is coming up in Thetford, a little preparation can make all the difference between a simple pass and an inconvenient fail. As a DVSA-approved MOT test centre, Gorse Motors has tested hundreds of local vehicles, and we’ve seen exactly what causes unnecessary failures. Here’s our guide on how to get your car ready at home, before your MOT – and avoid surprises on test day.

1. Check Basic Lights and Indicators

Over 20% of MOT failures are due to faulty bulbs. Make sure all exterior lights, indicators, brake lights, and number plate lights are working. Replace any blown bulbs before your appointment – it’s cheap and quick.

2. Inspect Tyres and Tread Depth

Your tyres must have at least 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Uneven wear or visible damage can cause a fail. We recommend checking with a tread gauge or visiting us for a quick inspection.

3. Test Wipers, Washers, and the Windscreen

Your wipers should clear the screen effectively, and your washer jets should spray correctly. Any cracks or chips larger than 10mm in the driver’s view can lead to a fail. We can replace wipers or advise on screen repairs before your MOT.

4. Check Fluids and Warning Lights

Make sure your oil, coolant, and screenwash are topped up. If your dashboard shows warning lights (especially ABS or engine management), it’s best to have them diagnosed before the MOT.

5. Clean Your Car Inside and Out

Believe it or not, a messy car can lead to an advisory or refusal if the tester can’t inspect safety features properly. Clear out the boot and make sure seatbelts and doors work correctly.

Preparation not only helps your car pass – it reduces stress and saves you money.
